It’s no secret, hangovers suck. It may seem impossible to avoid them the morning after an amazing night out, but here are 4 ways you can work towards a non-existent hangover.
- Don’t drink on an empty stomach. You’ve heard this since you were in high school - drinking on an empty stomach just leads to a horrid hangover. By having food in your system, you’ll give your body more time to absorb the alcohol, which will just result in less of a hangover!
- Avoid drinks with high levels of Congener. What does that mean? According to Smithsonian Magazine, drinks that have high levels of congener (chemicals created during fermentation besides ethanol) cause worse hangovers. The darker the drink, like bourbon or whiskey, the more severe the hangover.
- Match alcoholic drinks with cups of water. It’s the oldest trick in the book, but easily the most forgotten. Having water helps your body handle and flush the alcohol out of your system. Drinking a glass of water in between every drink will help you avoid the nausea, headaches, and dizziness the next day.
- Eat bread and chug water. At the end of the night, all you need are some carbohydrates and some water. The carbs really won’t do much at this point besides make you feel better, but they’re worth the shot. Avoid greasy foods – as amazing as they taste when you’re drunk, they aren’t worth the regret you’ll feel in the morning when you still have a hangover and feel the grease lingering. Keep a bottle of water by your bed – you’ll be grateful for it in the morning.
